Microsoft has received some awful feedback from its customers with regard to its services. In a study conducted by VendorRate, all the products of the software giant have received poor ratings by IT professionals for customer satisfaction, integrity, reliability and more.

The online survey was conducted by the market research firm on IT professionals of 347 hardware, software, telecom and service vendors during the second half of 2009. VendorRate asked the participants to rate vendors in 10 categories, including integrity, timeliness, communications, customer service, expertise, effectiveness, and whether they would recommend the vendor to others. It then added all the categories for each vendor to come up with a total.

For Microsoft, the ratings were generally miserable. Three different Microsoft businesses were given separate ratings, including operating systems, applications, and infrastructure. Looking at the poor ratings received by Microsoft for this quarter, Rick Schaefer, CEO of VendorRate says, "Microsoft's ratings simply fell off a cliff in this quarter."

IT professionals rating vendors in April, May and June has hit Microsoft with poor customer satisfaction scores for the company's server and infrastructure software (55 out of 100, down nearly 17 percent), operating systems (67, down 9.5 percent) and applications (64, off nearly 18 percent).

The survey also saw some of the other major technology companies take the bottom positions. Verizon was at the bottom of the list, with a 61 rating, followed by Sprint Nextel with 64, and Microsoft applications with 64. Microsoft operating systems was tied with AT&T Wireless for the next worst rating with a 67. That means Microsoft took two of the bottom five spots. IBM Informix, meanwhile, took the top spot for vendors with a 96. After this poor performance by Microsoft, all eyes are now on Windows 7, to see if that can bring some respite to the company.

Recession has made Americans to turn to internet

88 percent of the U.S. internet users, which comprise of more than two-thirds of American adults, went online for help with personal economic issues caused due to recession and to gather information and understand the national economic problems, according to a study conducted by Pew Internet & American Life Project. "People are anxious about these hard times. They are more information-hungry than in normal times," said Lee Rainie, Director of the nonprofit group and co-author of the report. The report also claims that 79 percent of Americans are internet users.

Based on the interviews conducted with 2,253 adults, the report says that almost 52 percent of American adults have either lost their jobs, seen their investments fall by more than half their value, suffered a pay cut or watched their house lose half its value during the downturn in the past year. Many U.S. companies have sacked huge number of employees and the unemployment rate hit 9.5 percent, the highest in nearly 26 years.

The study also says that the internet ranks high among sources of information and advice that people are seeking during hard times, especially when it comes to their personal finances and jobs. "That is a large number of those who are exploiting the Internet to participate in the roiling online discussion about how we got into this mess and how we are going to get out of it," Rainie said. Overall, 34 percent of online economic users have expressed themselves about the recession in places like blogs, social network sites and Twitter, the study reported. The more traditional way of talking with family and friends for advice and support has continued as well.

However, broadcast outpaced internet as source of news about national economic affairs. The report also states that the top three recession-related activities of these users were price comparisons, a general understanding of the economic downturn and new jobs. Around three percent of users searched on the Internet for information about filing for bankruptcy.

Swine Flu affected work in Wipro

H1N1 pandemic has hit the IT sector hard, as Wipro joins the league to take precautionary steps after Google closed its Hyderabad office for two days. Wipro is now giving two days paid leaves to its employees before reporting in the office who are coming from overseas, as techies have a significant number of swine flu positives, reports Times of India.

With 22 new cases of swine flu reported, highest in a day in India, the tally of influenza A infected rises to 251. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared it as "unstoppable" virus.

Fresh confirmed cases were reported from Delhi (7), Jalandhar (4), Cochin (2), Thiruvananthapuram (2), Mumbai (2), Pune (2), Hyderabad (1), Ahmedabad (1) and Bangalore (1).

So far 1,293 persons have been tested according to the Union Health Ministry, of which 251 were found positive for Influenza A (H1N1). Of these infected, 141 have been discharged after treatment. Remaining 110 are admitted to the identified health facilities.

Google and Wipro have had a case each of infection in their office, and have ensured to get the entire staff quarantined and the suspect cases tested for the infection. IT majors are sending out mails daily asking their travelling techies to take precautions. Microsoft's internal website has been uploaded with the information on swine flu along with travel guidelines. Similarly, the Mahindra Satyam's management has provided power point presentations to the staff, giving instructions on how to protect themselves, and also uploaded it on company's website.

"For anyone who is going on overseas assignments, they should report to office only after completion of 48 hours. The employees who returned from Sweden, were asked to do the same since the flu symptoms develop within 48 hours," informed a senior staff member in Wipro.

Elaborating on the status of a company where one of the employees contracted the virus and is a part of the cluster, District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO) Hyderabad, Dr. Jayakumari, said, "This company has a work force of 180. While one has tested positive, reports of another five have been sent for confirmatory tests while 56 have been given profilaxis treatment. Rest have been home quarantined."

Indian companies show signs of revival

Indian companies seem to be on a recovering phase after being badly affected by the economic downturn in the last two quarters. According to the research done by TeamLease Services, the net employment index of Indian companies increased by 22 index points for the July-September quarter over the previous quarter. The net business outlook has also registered an increase of 26 index points compared to the previous quarter, which was in negative.

Among all the sectors, Telecom topped the list with an increase of 55 index points followed by IT and Infrastructure with 53 points. Surabhi Mathur-Gandhi, General Manager, TeamLease Services says, "With the stabilization of economies and optimism in global expansion, there is a direct positive implication for the Indian employment situation. We are observing a slow and steady upsurge in hiring intent across sectors."

TeamLease releases the employment outlook report every quarter after a survey administered to the HR heads, CEOs and senior management of leading companies in India. The study, which covered 495 companies in the latest round, focuses on the employment growth potential, the business outlook and hiring forecasts with relation to the location and the company profile.

Among all the Indian cities, employment outlook index increased the most in Chennai by 37 points followed by Delhi/Pune and Hyderabad by 33 and 28 points respectively. The report observed that there is a steady increase in the intention to hire across most functions except for marketing, where there is a decrease in the intention to hire at all managerial levels, except senior levels.

Gandhi says, "There are active hiring plans reported by Indian employers, and the overall employment outlook, though a bit conservative, is bullish and upbeat."

Most of the analysts feel that the employment outlook is reflective of the confidence in Board Rooms after the recently concluded Lok Sabha election. The confidence of companies grew more by seeing the amount being allocated by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the recent budget presented in the Parliament.

Additionally, the stock market is also giving positive indication by rising from 8,000 mark in October to 14,000 mark today.

Tripedo vehicle designed by PESIT students

Imagine an auto-like four-seater vehicle, only with two wheels in the front and one at the rear. That’s exactly what final year engineering students of PESIT have designed. It’s aptly called ‘Tripedo’ — a torpedo of sorts on three wheels. “Our main aim was to create a family vehicle,” says Arun Nayak, who forms part of the fourmember team that also comprises Harshith H M, Chetan Naik, and Naga Santhosh.

Elaborating on the project, he said power is transmitted to the two wheels in front using a Maruti-800 engine. “The entire setup at the front is the same as that of a Maruti 800. The reason for choosing a front-wheel drive system is that it is safer in terms of stability, and offers much better riding comfort than an auto,” he says.
The team considered various parameters like aerodynamics and weight distribution to create a computer-aided design model.

It took four months to develop the vehicle. “Balancing the car at the rear end was major concern. We felt it would lift when brakes were applied. So we used heavier materials at the back,” he says.

Studying and working on the project wasn’t difficult. “We had classes on alternate days. On those days, we would work on the project in the evening, and on Saturdays, we would spend the whole day working on it. Since the place where we worked was closed on Sundays, we too had to take a weekly off,” he says.

So how much did it cost? “It cost Rs 50,000 to construct it. When it’s fully finished and mass produced, we expect it will be priced at Rs 80,000,” he says.

It’s the ultimate showdown in the technology world, the clash of giants that has been eagerly awaited for years. Web giant Google is taking its clearest aim yet at Microsoft with its plan to produce its own operating system that would optimise the way computers work on the Internet.

The Chrome operating system is due to be out in the second half of next year and will initially be used in netbooks, company executives Sundar Pichai and Linus Upson said in a blog posting. The operating system would be released as free, open-source software, which would allow anyone to use or modify it.

At the core of Google’s vision is the most important trend in the networked world: the move from running applications on a desktop computer to running them through a web browser.

From Gmail to Facebook and Picassa to Twitter, the most popular uses for computers are no longer the disc-churning software programmes like Microsoft Office, which have clogged up hard drives for years. The new paradigm is cloud-based computing, where all the heavy lifting and storage is done on companies’ server farms, which people access over their broadband connections. According to Google, it’s time that computers reflected the change.

“The operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web,” Google executives Sundar Pichai and Linus Upson wrote in a blog posting announcing the move.

The Chrome operating system is Google’s “attempt to re-think what operating systems should be”, based on three key attributes: “speed, simplicity and security”.

“We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you on to the web in a few seconds. We are completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.”

That vision sounds like digital heaven for computer users who have wrestled forever with bloated software and computers that progressively get slower and slower.

“People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them,” the Google blog said.

“They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don’t want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware or have to worry about constant software updates.” As enticing as that prospect may seem, it’s not guaranteed to work, says Don Retallack, vice president of research at Directions on Microsoft – a company that tracks the software giant.

“Google may or may not have the experience and capability of actually producing an operating system and getting it deployed,” he said. “It may not realise how hard it is.”

"We expect that over 25,000 jobs for Intellectual Property professionals will be created in the next 2-3 years. As there is an increase in the need for IP professionals in law firms, knowledge and legal process outsourcing companies and other corporate houses," said, Atulya Nath, CEO, Global Institute of Intellectual Property.

The lack of awareness of IP as a career option will gradually decrease with the need of professionals in the industry increasing and it will be seen as a lucrative career option, experts define. At present, there is shortage of IP professionals in the country as compared to the world over.

"Enforcement of IP issues is an area which would generate so many jobs in the coming days, as we all are witnessing an increase in the number of cases related with the infringement of intellectual property rights," said Rodney D Ryder, IP Expert, Kochhar & Co.

Over the last decade, IP laws in the country have been in a transition, as the country follows with its obligations under Trade Related aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPs). The IP industry includes patents, trademarks, design, geographical indications and copyrights.

"The role of IP professionals would further increase in the coming days as the issues related with patent, trademarks, design and copyrights are becoming more vital," Ryder added.

The industry is growing at an unseen pace; experts believe it will grow much faster.

"We estimate around 4,000 people are working in different areas of IP and should double in the next 2-3 years. IP, particularly trademarks and patents are considered vital in growth strategy of businesses and this can be seen from the increase in the number of patent and trademark filings in the recent years and the increase in litigation related to IP matters," said Bhaskar Bagchi, India Head, CPA Global.

In sectors like pharmaceutical and IT where there are large, diverse and complex trademark and patent portfolios, the need for IP professionals is greater, experts said.

World is recovering from Recession

The world is beginning to pull out of its first recession since World War II, the International Monetary Fund said Wednesday.

In an updated economic forecast, the IMF said the global economy was already stabilising, the financial crisis has eased and the recession will end in the second half of this year.
The report marked the first time the IMF has sounded a more positive note since the financial crisis struck in October, though the global lender also warned against complacency.

"While the global economy is still in recession, the recovery is coming," said IMF chief economist Olivier Blanchard. The world economy will shrink 1.4 percent this year but grow by 2.5 percent in 2010, the IMF said. That compares to an April forecast of a 1.3-percent contraction in 2009 and growth of 1.9 percent next year.

But the IMF warned the recovery would be "uneven" and growth would remain "sluggish" for much of the next 2 years, especially in wealthy countries where the economic crisis began.

Much of the growth over the next 2 years will come from the emerging world. Wealthy countries will shrink 3.8 percent this year and grow only 0.6 percent in 2010, the IMF said. Developing countries will grow 1.5 per cent in 2009 and 4.7 percent next year.

Six lakh jobs lost in India in 4 months

More than six lakh Indians have lost their jobs in the duration of just four months after the economic crisis has hit Indian shores in the month of Oct'08.

According to the Economic survey, about five lakh people lost their jobs in the October-December 2008 period, while over one lakh were shed in January this year, the Economic
Survey said. In September, the crisis turned severe following the bankruptcy of
American financial services major Lehman Brothers. Since then, millions of jobs have been shed worldwide, as companies resorted to massive layoffs as part of their cost cutting measures.

According to the survey conducted by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, during the three months from October to December 2008, there was a decline in employment of about half a million workers. Among the sectors, the most hit by the financial turmoil are gems and jewellery, transport and automobiles.

"The most affected sectors were gems and jewellery, transport and automobiles where employment has declined by 8.58 percent, 4.03 percent and 2.42 percent, respectively during the period (October to December 2008)," report said.

However, the survey conducted by the Labour Bureau for the January-March period showed improvement in the employment scenario in selected sectors. The Labour Bureau survey, which covered 3,192 units, indicated improvement in the selected sectors with employment rising by a "quarter million".

"Sectors registering increased employment were gems and jewellery (3.08 percent), textiles (0.96 percent), IT-BPO (0.82 percent), handloom-powerloom (0.56 percent) and automobile (0.10 percent)," the Survey said quoting the Labour Bureau.

In the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-12), about 58 million employment opportunities are projected to be created and the unemployment rate is anticipated to fall below five per cent.

Before you Begin Test:

1. Preview the test before you answer anything. This gets you thinking about the material. Make sure to note the point value of each question. This will give you some ideas on budgeting your time.
2. Do a mind dump. Using what you saw in the preview, make notes of anything you think you might forget. Write down things that you used in learning the material that might help you remember. Outline your answers to discussion questions.
3. Quickly calculate how much time you should allow for each section according to the point value. (You don't want to spend 30 minutes on an essay question that counts only 5 points.)

Taking a Test:

4. Read the directions. (Can more than one answer be correct? Are you penalized for guessing? etc.) Never assume that you know what the directions say.

5. Answer the easy questions first. This will give you the confidence and momentum to get through the rest of the test. You are sure these answers are correct.

6. Go back to the difficult questions. While looking over the test and doing the easy questions, your subconscious mind will have been working on the answers to the harder ones. Also, later items on the test might give you useful or needed information for earlier items.

7. Answer all questions (unless you are penalized for wrong answers).

8. Ask the instructor to explain any items that are not clear. Do not ask for the answer, but phrase your question in a way that shows the instructor that you have the information but are not sure what the question is asking for.

9. Try to answer the questions from the instructor's point of view. Try to remember what the instructor emphasized and felt was important.

10. Use the margin to explain why you chose the answer if the question does not seem clear or if the answer seems ambiguous.

11. Circle key words in difficult questions. This will force you to focus on the central point.

12. Express difficult questions in your own words. Rephrasing can make it clear to you, but be sure you don't change the meaning of the question.

13. Use all of the time allotted for the test. If you have extra time, cover up your answers and actually rework the question.

India pays heavy penalty for not utilizing its loans

Even as India is trying to get more loans from World Bank to improve infrastructure and transport, an internal assessment from finance section reveals that the loans given to India before are not properly utilized. Many past projects are running behind schedule and the government has been paying commitment charges in crores every year.

In 2007-08 and 2008-09, India has paid Rs 240 crore as commitment charge for the undisbursed portion of the loans sanctioned by World Bank and other multilateral agencies such as Asian Development Bank (ADB). In last five years time, Indian government has paid close to Rs 700 crore as commitment charges

Due to a lack of coordination among different government departments, several projects and development schemes are not completed on time. According to a source from Finance Ministry, there were 231 externally aided projects of which more than 40 percent were paying commitment charges.
Government has approached for loans even when they already had a portion of undisbursed loans. According to ADB portfolio, undisbursed loan amount has increased from $850 million in 1999 to $3.5 billion at the end of 2006.

Commitment charges are a penalty on the failure to utilize the committed aid. Funds have been sought for many highway and power projects even before they are ready, or even before the previous loans had been utilized.

India has borrowed Rs 12,800 crore from ADB from 2001 and 2007 and between this time, it paid Rs 230 crore to the agency as commitment charges. An estimated 60 percent of World Bank and ADB loan portfolio are currently paying commitment charges. Questions have also been raised on the way the loans have been negotiated.
In many cases, the government had bargained loans with commitment charges as high as 0.75 percent when the rate of interest in the international market was around one percent.

5. Focus on the main ideas and learn key formulas. Skip the details for now and only come back to them if you see that you have time after you have learned the key points.

6. Write down the key ideas/formulas on a sheet of paper and keep on studying from that sheet, repetition is important.

7. Highlight the important points in your notes, and text and focus on that.

8. Read the chapter summaries (they usually do a good job at summarizing the important points). If there're no chapter summaries then skim through the text and write down key ideas.

9. Study from past tests, review questions, homeworks & review sheets.

10.Take at least one five minute break an hour so that you can gather your thoughts and let your brain relax.

11. If time permits, try to get at least 3 hours of sleep (one sleep cycle) before the exam so that you don't fall asleep when taking your exam. Don't forget to set your alarm!

Indian students made car for global championship

With the 600 cc car they have designed and fabricated, a bunch of engineering students from Punjab are all geared up to take part in the prestigious Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) competition in the US next month.

This car is made by a group of 10 students of engineering (nine from mechanical and one from electrical stream) of Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, near Ropar town in Punjab, around 50 km from here.

They will participate in the Formula SAE International Competition at Fontana, California in the US, June 17-20.

"We are determined to give a tough fight to all other universities. Our concept is based on speed and our car can easily go up to a speed of 260 km per hour in normal conditions. We have tested it on different kinds of roads," vice-captain of the group Kenneth Dean told reporters Saturday.

"The cost of this car is nearly Rs.650,000 but the overall cost of this project is Rs.35 lakh (Rs. 3.5 million). All the members of our team have contributed Rs.200,000 each and rest is borne by our college," added Dean.

He said the group has been working on this project for the last six months. The car has a five speed gear and it can reach 110 km per hour within only 4.4 seconds.

"Its weight is 300 kg with aerodynamic design and it's equipped with advanced safety equipment. We have used various hi-tech technologies in the car and it has been designed and finally analysed using software like Pro-E and AN-SYS," pointed out Dean.

SAE is a 29-year-old annual competition and this year only one college from India is competing among 81 universities from across the world. Other participating countries include the US, Britain, Italy, Japan, Brazil, Germany and Australia.

In June 2008, students of the same college went to the SAE competition in Michigan in the US with their super-mileage car and won accolades for the country.

"Our super-mileage car bagged first place in Asia and 13th position in the world. It could easily give a mileage of 250 km in one litre. That time our focus was on mileage but this time, we zeroed only on speed," said Gurvinder Singh Bahra, vice-chairman of educational group Rayat-Bahra.

When companies are cutting salaries of their employees due to the economic slowdown, IT bellwether Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has decided to increase the pay packages for its top management and board members. The total increase would be to the tune of Rs. 1 crore. During 2008-09, the total remuneration paid by TCS to its top executives and board members was Rs 12.80 crore compared to Rs 11.08 crore in the last fiscal.

TCS said it paid remunerations by way of salary, benefits, perquisites and allowances and commission to Managing Director and executive directors and the annual increments were effective from April 1, every year.

According to the company's annual report, Chief Executive S Ramadorai got the highest pay package, with a total remuneration of Rs 4.1 crore. Ramadorai's package grew by about 22 percent from Rs 3.37 crore he got in the previous fiscal. Incoming CEO N Chandrasekaran would be getting a better hike as he replaces Ramadorai later this year. The pay for Chandrasekaran rose by 36 percent from Rs 1.41 crore to Rs 1.92 crore.

Among the board members, Executive Director Phiroz Vandrevala got the highest pay hike of 41 percent as it grew from Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.41 crore.

Exam week can be difficult, dangerous, even overwhelming. You may feel helpless and hopeless, as though there is nothing you can do. After a semester of too many classes and too much work, you think you'll have to stay up all night studying to pass your final exams.
But wait! Help is on the way!
Below are handy hints for exam time, developed during ten arduous years as a student and fifteen more as a teacher.

Two Weeks Before the Exam

* Make up a set of study sheets for each class.
* Each set of study sheets should summarize the reading, your class notes, and any handouts.
* Type the study sheets so they are easily readable. Use plenty of bold type and white space to accentuate important ideas.
* For the next two weeks, read through your study sheets three times each day. Do not try hard to memorize the information. Just read the notes once, three times per day.

The Night Before the Exam

* Read your study sheets as usual.
* Go to bed early and get a good night's sleep.

The Day of the Exam

* Set your alarm and get up early. Allow plenty of time to get to the exam.
* Eat a good breakfast, including simple sugars (fruit juice), complex carbohydrates (cereal or toast), and protein (milk, eggs, meat, cheese). This will help your blood sugar stay at a stable level, and since your brain runs on sugar, you don't want to have an empty tank.
* Caffeine has been shown to increase alertness and performance. If you are a habitual user of caffeine, be sure to get your accustomed dose.
* Take along a piece of fruit to eat during the exam. This will help keep your blood sugar even, so you don't tire during the second half of the exam period.

During the Exam

* Read the entire exam before beginning to write. Know your enemy, in other words.

* Read each question a second time, then answer that question.
* Go on to the next question. Remember to look at the clock and keep moving through the test.
* After the first hour and fifteen minutes, relax, stretch, eat your fruit. Calm down. You know the material.

Drives not opening by double clicking? :here is solution

Drives not opening automatically when double clicked is due to a trojan or virus having put an "autorun.inf" on all your drives. Even if you try to remove it by manually deleting from Windows, it still stays. To delete it, follow these steps :-

Go to Start --> Programs --> Accessories
Take Command prompt
or [ Start --> Run (or Win key + R) and type cmd ]

In the Command Prompt Window type the following commands

cd\
attrib autorun.inf -s -h -r
del autorun.inf

now autorun.inf in your root drive is removed. For deleting autorun.inf in other hard disk drives and usb removable drives or pen drives, type the following commands in the command prompt window itself :-

[drive letter]: ( if drive letter is D, then type D: )
attrib autorun.inf -s -h -r
del autorun.inf

Repeat the above step for all drives

For pen drives, Safely Remove pen drives and plug it again.
For HDD drives, Restart the computer.
Thats it. Your drives will open normally when double-clicked.

To avoid virus from entering your computer the next time you plug in a pen drive, hold 'Shift' while inserting the flash drive for 5 to 10 seconds to disable autoplay feature temporarily. Then using the above commands, delete autorun.inf from your pen drive.

You can also disable Autoplay feature as such from your computer by editing group policy in Windows XP Professional but I don't recommend it to beginning users or amateurs. To edit group policy, Go to Start --> Run and type gpedit.msc

India to have 893 Million mobile users by 2012

The mobile subscriber base is expected to zoom to 893 million by 2012. This is a 150 million increase of what was projected earlier, as per a report by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). The COAI's earlier estimates had shown that mobile user base will reach 743 million by 2012. The major reason stated for the increase is the huge adoption of the mobile services in the rural areas, reported The Business Line.

India is now the second largest mobile market in the world after China, which has over 650 million subscribers, with India having 400 million mobile users. According to COAI's projection, there will be 1.24 billion mobile users in 2015 - which means one phone for every Indian.

"We have revised the projections because the rate at which infrastructure is growing is faster than what we had expected. Operators are moving into the hinterland and uncovered areas. Secondly, we are getting almost 50 per cent of our new additions from the rural areas. The third factor is that the level of competition has increased with new players in the sector which again leads to faster deployment of networks," says T. V. Ramachandran, Director-General, COAI.

"Indian growth story is here to stay. I will push back against any view that says to the contrary. There is still a huge untapped market in both rural and urban areas," says Atul Bindal, President, Mobility, Bharti Airtel. According to him, three out of five new subscribers are now coming from non-urban areas and expect to get the company's next 100 million users in another two-three years.

Despite the global slowdown, the online shopping in India has increased. The growing pace of online buying is because of the attractive discounted prices offer and the ability of the customers to research and compare the prices across several outlets.

The average frequency of online purchases in India grew up to 2.9 in the fourth quarter of 2008 from 2.6 during the same quarter in 2007, as reported by the survey of MasterCard Worldwide.

"The economic meltdown has not affected our business," said Mukesh Bansal, CEO, Myntra.com, an e-commerce portal which specializes in personalized gifting and merchandise space in India. He said, "Our business has increased up to five times this year despite the economic recession. Currently, we possess a database of 25,000 designs posted by a thousand designers so that the users can create their own merchandise by selecting the designs sitting at home."

Bansal also said that with the rise in bandwidth penetration in India and the increasing awareness of internet among people, the online shoppers sense the convenience to click on the products they want to purchase.Holding onto a similar conviction, Sachin Lakharia, CEO, Shopnics said, "With the convenience of online buying, customers can save their time and money to move across multiple outlets for a product."

The online shoppers also plan their shopping in advance and conduct research on their planned purchases. It becomes easier for the customers to decide the price at which they want the products. Sharing views on this point, Jyoti Ramnath, CEO, Craftmygift says, "Through the online shopping, customers can attain the objective of value for money during these tough times."

Today, India is the only country where the 18 to 29 years age group has the highest average spend on online shopping. In India, the popular online purchases include the home appliances and the electronic gadgets like cell phones, camera, laptops and so on. According to the survey, the e-purchasing of electronic products has gone up by 51 percent.

So to drive these online shoppers, e-commerce portals are adopting a networking culture by incorporating 'social networking feature' in their websites, so that people can discuss with their friends and relatives before buying the particular product. There are more startups, who are innovating their products to combat slowdown.

Problem:If you try to delete a file that is write-protected or is currently in use by another user or application,Windows will not allow you to delete it.Access to the file can also be denied if you’re logged into the system with a restricted user account that does not have the necessary privileges to delete files.

Solution:Generally, all that is necessary to resolve this problem, provided you are logged into the system with sufficient privileges,is to shut down all running applications.Once the apps are closed, try deleting the file(s) again. We commonly see this error when doing routine maintenance on some of the systems in the lab.
The Windows TEMP folder usually contains files that can be safely deleted, but when applications are running, some files are placed in this folder and cannot be removed until the application is closed. Email clients and antivirus software are the most common culprits.

Bad sectors found on Drive? : here is solution

Problem:The platters used in today’s hard drives are broken down into tracks and sectors. Each sector is a small portion of the drive where data is stored. Inevitably, some of these sectors become corrupt and can no longer be used. When a sector goes “bad” the data stored there is usually lost.

Solution:Disk diagnostic utilities,such as
Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor,inspect a drive and will attempt to repair bad sectors.More often than not,however,that bad sector can no longer be used because it has become corrupted in some way.These diagnostic utilities will then mark that
bad sector as unusable,and the system will no longer attempt to write new data there. Most drive manufacturers also have free, downloadable.

PC turning off automatically? : here is solution

Does your PC turns off while you are playing games or working on something? Here’s what might be wrong.You need to make sure your system hardware such as RAM and CPU is capable of running the intensive software you are. The 512MB RAM you have is kinda small these days especially for the latest games.

Your computer’s power supply unit might be peaking and you may need another more powerful one to handle everything.

Your system might also be overheating when doing anything intensive for long periods so google cpu monitoring tools to download some software to check this. Anything over 50 or 60 degrees Celsius is probably getting too hot so you might need a better cooling solution or some thermal compound. Make sure the cpu is fitted properly too.

Make sure the graphic card is seated properly and all the pins are ok.

As always, make sure you have updated anti-virus and firewall software and run it regularly but maybe try turning these off when you are playing to see if this is an issue.

Problem:A hard drive can only hold so much data. If you try to copy 2GB worth of files to a drive that only has 1GB of free space left, you’ll get this error.

Solution:In order to cram those new files onto your hard drive, you’ll have to free up some space. Before you begin uninstalling infrequently used applications, run Disk Cleanup (go to My Computer,right-click on your drive,select Properties from the menu, and then click the Disk Cleanup button) to free you drive of unnecessary temporary files, and compress files that you haven’t accessed in awhile.
You can also try clearing older System Restore points that won’t be used any longer (click on the More Options tab in the Disk Cleanup menu,and click on the Clean Up... button in the System Restore section).You’ll be surprised by the amount of space that you can free by doing these two steps if you’ve never used Windows Disk Cleanup feature before. If that doesn’t free up enough space, though, you can start uninstalling applications that you no longer need. Once you’ve you free up the necessary amount
of space, try copying the files again.

According to placement firms, companies in these sectors now have around 25,000 vacancies in total. They are tapping the pool of laid-off people for 'industry neutral' executives in functions such as human resource, finance, system administration, marketing and sales.

"Lower recruitment during the slowdown hasn't helped the talent crisis in India, especially in fast growing sectors. Several such companies are evaluating the laid-off talent pool to hand-pick niche skills," said Andrew Heard, Asia-Pac head of Watson Wyatt, a global human capital consulting firm.

The pool of laid-off talent in India from sectors such as IT, retail, banking and financial services, textiles and others could be as high as seven lakh, indicate data available with headhunters. "Of this, at least 15 percent would be in white-collar roles, and are the prime target for low-cost talent acquisition," said E Balaji, CEO of HR firm Ma Foi Management Consultant.

This is a significant transformation for Indian companies that are perceived to have a mindset problem when it comes to hiring people who have been laid off.

"We do not differentiate among professionals who may have lost their job," said Vsevolod Rozanov, president and chief executive officer of telecom firm Sistema Shyam TeleServices (SSTL). "In areas like customer service, we are indeed looking for people from other sectors, and even the laid-off pool. We can always train them for our needs," said Rozanov. SSTL currently has 1,600 people, and plans to ramp it up to 3,000 by December, as it plans to expand to 4-6 new circles.

Cheap rockets fired by insurgents are taking a deadly toll in the Middle East. Can a new generation of solid-state lasers blow them out of the sky?

Rockets, mortars, and other forms of artillery have a long and grim history on the battlefield. In a conventional war, an army being bombarded by these from afar can respond by firing back at the attacker’s battery. But you can’t turn the massive firepower of modern armies onto insurgents hiding among civilian populations without courting disaster. Instead of striking the enemy, who run to other hiding spots after firing their weapons, such retaliation would mostly hit civilians.

What the U.S. military dearly wants is a weapon that can defend against such attacks more selectively, shooting down explosive-laden projectiles in the air before they reach their targets. The armament should be easy to field and should strike at the speed of light, but it should not send streams of bullets screaming toward the horizon. In short, the military wants a laser weapon that’s small and rugged but powerful enough to ignite explosive payloads on incoming projectiles while they’re still a safe distance away.

It’s a bold vision for laser defense, bolstered by a dramatic technology demonstration that didn’t make Page One: For five solid minutes in March, an electrically powered solid-state laser pumped out 100 kilowatts of infrared light, the first of its kind to make ”weapons class.”

Each armed service has its own plans for that technology. The U.S. Army and its Israeli allies want truck-mounted lasers to zap short-range rockets on the battlefield or border. The U.S. Air Force wants compact lasers for fighter jets. The Navy wants to defend ships against attacks. And research efforts in China and Russia have been reported as far back as 1995.

And yet, laser weapon R&D is celebrating its 50th birthday this year without much to show for it. In fact, in early April the U.S. Defense Department shelved plans to buy a fleet of 747s to house giant gas-filled antimissile lasers. The old technology was proving too bulky and underpowered to blow North Korean missiles out of the sky without flying within antiaircraft range.

High-energy laser research is at an inflection point. Powered by semiconductors, a new generation of lasers promises new opportunities—and presents a whole new batch of problems.

Laser weapons, like flying cars, have been demonstrated many times, but in the real world their problems have always outweighed their benefits—literally. Weight cripples laser weapons and flying cars alike. Most experimental laser weapons have been so big and heavy that cynical observers have joked that their only conceivable combat use would be to drop them on the enemy.

That’s because the size of a laser weapon is inversely related to its efficiency—and laser efficiencies can be pretty dismal. The red helium-neon gas laser long used for classroom demonstrations turned only 0.01 to 0.1 percent of electrical power input into light. The diode lasers used in today’s inexpensive laser pointer do much better, converting about 10 percent of the electrical energy they draw from their batteries into light. The rest is lost as heat. This is no big deal for a milliwatt-power laser pointer, because the heat generated is negligible. But it’s a thorny problem for a laser weapon. At 10 percent efficiency, it would take 1 megawatt to generate a 100-kilowatt laser beam, leaving 900 kW as heat that must be dissipated somehow.

But that didn’t stop the U.S. Missile Defense Agency from building a megawatt laser. To achieve a 1-MW beam with 10 percent efficiency would require a whopping 10 MW of input energy and produce a hefty 9 MW of waste heat. Nevertheless, later this year a beast with such power, called the Airborne Laser (ABL), will be put to the test of blasting dummy nuclear missiles from the sky.

Here’s how. ABL is the latest example in a class of high-energy lasers called flowing-gas lasers. They are powered by burning chemical fuels like those that drive rocket engines. Hot molecules in the gas emit a cascade of light emissions, producing a powerful laser beam. Rocket-engine lasers have generated infrared beams that can reach a couple of megawatts for a few seconds at a time. The technology used in ABL can turn more than 20 percent of the combustion energy into laser light in the laboratory, but ABL’s efficiency is undisclosed. In such a laser, the exhaust gas carries away the energy left behind as heat.

But so far the US $5 billion ABL can barely squeeze into a Boeing 747. The laser is completely unsuited to the battlefield. It’s being designed to destroy long-range missiles rising through the atmosphere a couple of hundred kilometers away, but it’s vastly overpowered for the comparatively easy job of hitting slow-moving mortar shells only a kilometer or two away. It would be like shooting deer with a cannon. So in 1996 the U.S. Army and the Israeli Ministry of Defense teamed up to test smaller lasers against mortars and rockets. For that task, they tapped Redondo Beach, Calif.–based aerospace contractor TRW (acquired by Northrop Grumman Corp. in 2002) to build a 100-kilowatt-class flowing-gas laser, a compact version of ABL.

The result, called the Tactical High-Energy Laser (THEL), made laser defense look promising. In 2000, it shot down a short-range Katyusha rocket over the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. But by 2004 the United States and Israel agreed THEL wasn’t up to the job, ending any further tests.

Five Indian banks among world's top 1000

After a year of carnage in the global banking industry, five Indian banks figured in the list of the world's top 1,000 banks in 2009, compiled by trade magazine 'The Banker'. State-owned State Bank of India holds the first position among the Indian banks and ranked 64th position and ICICI bank ranked 81st among global banks.

The top five banks in the world are JP Morgan Chase followed by Bank of America, CITI Group, Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC Holdings by capital strength.
Among all these five banks, HSBC is the only bank that has not received any government support. The other Indian banks in the global first 500 league are Punjab National bank, HDFC Bank and Bank of India at 239, 242 and 263, respectively.

The rankings are based on nine parameters-the strength of their Tier I capital, the size of their assets, their capital adequacy ratio, pre-tax profit, growth in profit and five performance indicators (profits on average capital, return on assets, cost income ratio, Basle capital ratio and percentage of non-performing loans).

'The Banker', a part of the Financial Times group has been carrying the rankings since 1970. According to publication, banks that stuck to the basics, taking deposits and lending in their home markets fared the best.

"In future banks will be run much more conservatively. Regulators will require them to hold more capitals and be less leveraged which will reduce the profits of the industry as a whole but will bring about a safer banking system," said Brian Caplen, Editor, The Banker.
